Yoga, an ancient gift from India, continues to inspire people worldwide to maintain their health. Recognized as a valuable tradition, yoga has emerged as one of the most reliable methods for enhancing both physical and mental well-being. On June 21, International Yoga Day was celebrated in nearly 190 countries around the globe. This year, as in previous years, the event in Ahmedabad took place at the Madhuram Education Reform Center in the Sarkhej area, under the leadership of Maganbhai Patel, the president and founder of the Evening Service Foundation. Over 100 underprivileged children participated, including some from the Chinmaya organization who are mentally challenged. Maganbhai Patel practiced yoga with these children to uplift their spirits, as depicted in the accompanying images.
Recognition for Community Efforts
Maganbhai Patel received a 'Certificate of Appreciation' from the Gujarat State Yoga Board for his financial support in making this 15-day yoga program a success. The area is home to over 250 economically disadvantaged families living in slums. During the monsoon season, the region often becomes inundated, lacking proper roads and basic amenities. Maganbhai Patel frequently visits these areas to assist children with their education and works to empower their parents through employment opportunities. Madhubhai Shukla, the director of the Madhuram Education Reform Center, provides free tuition to needy children daily, while Maganbhai Patel covers their expenses for notebooks, school fees, stationery, and other educational costs. For the past 30 years, he has been dedicated to serving this community, exemplifying social service by providing extensive support to the impoverished and needy.
Empowering Women in the Community
Maganbhai Patel has also assisted women who are heads of their families, including widows and abandoned women with two to three children. He has provided sewing machines to help them become self-sufficient, as shown in the images. Additionally, he supports local residents by supplying employment-oriented kits and aiding in their marketing efforts.
A Vision for the Future
During the International Yoga Day event, Maganbhai Patel emphasized in his relevant address that today’s children are the future of our nation. By strengthening them physically, mentally, and economically, we can soon see India among the developed nations. He stressed the importance of community participation, stating that while the government is doing its part, social organizations must also contribute to uplift the marginalized sections of society.
The Significance of Yoga
Maganbhai Patel explained that the term 'yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'yuj,' meaning to unite or join, symbolizing the harmony between mind and body, thoughts and actions, as well as the balance between humanity and nature. The United Nations declared June 21 as International Yoga Day through resolution 69/131 on December 11, 2014.
Global Support for Yoga Day
The proposal for establishing International Yoga Day was initiated by India and supported by 175 countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi first introduced this proposal during the 69th session of the General Assembly on September 27, 2014. June 21 was chosen as it coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, representing symbolic harmony between nature and human welfare. This day marks the beginning of a health revolution focused on prevention rather than treatment.
The Evolution of International Yoga Day
The inaugural International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015, at Rajpath in New Delhi, with participation from 35,985 individuals. Today, International Yoga Day has expanded globally, celebrated at iconic locations from Times Square in the USA to the Eiffel Tower, and is recognized in over 190 countries. Maganbhai Patel echoed Prime Minister Modi's sentiments, noting that after 11 years, yoga has become an integral part of millions of lives worldwide, evolving into a global movement for health, peace, and harmony. More than just physical exercise, yoga is a pathway to global welfare, mental clarity, and spiritual strength, continuing to inspire the world towards better health.
